The First Filipino is Leon Ma. Guerrero III’s biography of Jose Rizal. Having won First Prize in the Rizal Biography Contest under the auspices of the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission in 1961, it is lauded for its portrayal of a flawed and human Jose Rizal, which contrasted with the extreme portrayals of him as a sinner or saint found in biographies of him at the time. Containing letters, poems, and essays from Rizal himself, much effort has been placed by Guerrero to allow Rizal to speak for himself.
